Would be great if that article on Wee John Mc Killop of Cushendall by Brendan Crossan could be posted more widely. Superb journalism . So real and true. It says much and means more. Speaks about humanity and community at their best.

Hello Ciaran, im just wondering if there is a fee for your free taking workshop on the 13th? I would like to improve my free taking as I would like to push onto the Antrim County Minor squad this year. Also I have a friend who cannot make it, so im just enquiring if you could have a separate Hurling free taking workshop with him please.

First of all I am delighted to see the championship draws out. Hoewever I think our first priority in our County is to get of to a brilliant start to the league on the 13th. I think if our county team is doing well and our players within our county team are performing we will be in for an amazing championship this year. I think that there are many great teams in the championship this year and it is very open. Cushendall, Loughgeil, Ballycastle and Dunloy. I among with a few other Dunloy hurlers recieved an Ulster Colleges 2015-16 All Star and I think we could push on from this and improve hurling within Antrim and in the championship this year. This was a great achievement for me and I would like to thank everyone within the county as I have represented many underage teams within the county and I feel my game has improved a lot from this and without this I wouldnt have recieved one. However I dont want to talk about me too much, however the Championship draw looks like a good one and we could be in for an exciting summer of hurling this year. But as I mentioned before 13th Febraury is our counties first priority in terms of hurling and I think we should get out and support the lads, and get Antrim Hurling back to where it should be. Goodluck to the lads next Saturday! come on the saffs

Former Hurler

1st February 2016

In reply to Ciaran Cavanagh, as a former Division 1 hurler for over 10 years with a club in North Antrim, I strongly disagree with his sentiment. In Division 1 during the 1990s and 2000s when scheduled to play Ballygalget, Portaferry, and Ballycran, you knew you were in for a tough hard fair game of hurling. The length of the round trip didn't even come into the thinking as a good game of hurling was on offer. Did you play Division 1 Hurling Ciaran? Im guessing not. Having played on county teams over the 1990s I regularly came into contact with hurlers from other clubs, and these hurlers also valued the inclusion of the Down clubs in the Antrim leagues. I would be fairly certain that the same conclusion applies to this day. The inclusion of the aforementioned clubs is very important to the promotion of GOOD hurling in Antrim. I cant really speak for the standard of non Antrim clubs in the Antrim leagues in the lower divisions, but I would imagine that they do bring a certain value to the leagues they are in.

I would just like to wish all the Antrim Minor County Hurling team all the best for this year. I had the privilege to play for them last year and I hope the can win another ulster title like I did. It was achievement for me and I hope it will happen again this year to promote Antrim Hurling #upthesaffs #saffsforLiam2017

Regarding teams from outside taking part in Antrim Hurling leagues, I believe this has resulted in a negative impact on promoting Hurling in both Antrim and outside counties. It also allows county boards in places like Down and Derry to negate their responsibility to seriously promote Hurling. The logistics for teams is also a night mare ,teams having to travel to Derry city and Portaferry mid week for matches srl , we unlike other counties in Ulster actually promote both codes, however this results in a very tight schedule adding outside teams only adds to the schedule burden. While I don't want to be parochial, but sometimes you have to get your own house in order. In Antrim we have a lot of work to be getting on with to promote Gaelic Games and culture, with limited resources, let's focus on Antrim and allow the Ulster council focus on promoting Hurling in the rest of Ulster.

4 teams that were competing in ACHL Division 2 last year will now be part of Division 3. I suspect that the 2 outside teams being discussed for entry into our leagues would be aiming short/ medium for division 2. Not sure who this will affect. But haven't seen over many years that many paying a lot of attention to where teams are at in leagues. The new structure this year creates a bit of interest that could be added to by outside clubs. We need to improve standards in Ulster by Ulster teams upping their standard of competition. Would be on for change.

Hurling leagues - In response to 'Let them in'

28th January 2016

Very easy to say 'Let them in' without thinking of the consequences. Two teams finished last year safe in the knowledge they had qualified for the new divisional structure as agreed by the clubs in 2014. They trained and played to ensure hurling at an appropriate level and probably to try to move forward, maybe even hoping to inspire their juveniles to aim higher. Now they (1 an Antrim club) are ejected to Div 4. Div 1 and Div 2 clubs are probably happy to let new clubs into Div 3 - it doesn't impact on them Could we not have moved to a 10 team Div 3? The county will still survive and two clubs won't feel robbed.
