Joe Ferguson

14th March 2016

I have lived in Melbourne for 45 years but have never stopped following and supporting Antrim in football and hurling. I am especially delighted at Antrim's progress in the 2016 National Leagues. I couldn't help noticing in the current reports some familiar names like McCann, Niblock, Armstrong etc. Could these lads be related to players in the 1969 All Ireland under 21 Champions team. I can say, with pride, that I was there in Croke Park on that great day. I also presume that the manager is the great Junior Fitzsimons who I drove home after training many times in the sixtys. Those were the days when Antrim's three most ardent home and travelling supporters were Pat McLoughlin, Seamus O'hare and myself. Good luck and onwards and upwards. Joe Ferguson.

Joe , thank you for the kind words and your ongoing support. Yes, the current joint manager is Junior's son .

A great man in his 2nd year of management of the Senior footballers along side ex Antrim player Gearóid Adams.

Do stay in touch via our Social Media outlets.

Best wishes

Well done to Scoil Naomh Lughaidh An Baile Meánach on reaching the All Ireland Final. Fantastic achievement for this group of lads - Casement Cup last year, Mageenan Cup this year and an All Ireland Final on Easter Monday in Thurles. Probably in school terms in Antrim, it's one of the biggest achievements in 25 years. A non traditional school (Antrim) reaching an All Ireland is a huge achievement. Huge support, in any way possible, should be given to these lads over the next 2 weeks. Mol an óige agus tiocfadh sí.

Yes a fantastic result. Well done!

Great photo of the boys there on the plane. Nice buzz going round the county at the minute so let's keep it going. A quick glance shows Waterford are better than their league position suggests. They hammered Carlow easier than we did, in Carlow so that's a pointer of how hard Sundays game will be. Hopefully we can scrape another 2 points and if so we are nearly there.

Yes, a great buzz for the footballers and Kevin Niblock's over the shoulder photo!

Keep the buzz going and lets see wins for the footballers & hurlers then Cushendall

There will rightly be positive attention on Antrim hurling with Cushendall's historic journey to the All Ireland Hurling final. Their journey has taken 35 years of striving. So change in fortunes is possible. To realise our potential in Antrim will also take serious effort. Are there any plans or consideration given to target development of hurling in places like Larne , Ballymoney and even Ballymena- 3 significant centres of population in North Antrim where hurling is absent or on life support?

We want to develop all clubs in Antrim and promote both codes.

fashion show

26th February 2016

Agree totally with old fashioned. It would be nice to look better but the reality is our county simply can't afford to have every team kitted out in the latest fashions. Now if a team goes on to win a few games and get into a final or something that is different. In that case the funding will be found. I've been involved as a mentor for a few years and I've seen players leave the squad the minute they get their "free gear". No point in comparing us to Derry. They have ten thousand people going to their club championship semis. We have a couple of hundred unless Cargin play St Galls. The prize for an aspiring county player is pulling on a Saffron jersey and getting some game time. The rest is a bonus. If parent is still a bit miffed then put your name forward to go out and arrange some fundraising.

Old fashioned

Delighted that our Minor team beat Derry! Too much nonsense around 'playing gear'! One ball and thirty players competing to get their hands on it - hasn't changed over the years. It is not a fashion competition! Priorities please!

Well done to all the minor players and managers on a good win over Derry last night. It was very pleasing how all the players worked really hard for the cause and they really deserved their victory. What was less pleasing was the obvious under funding of this group of honest lads who gave their all and are the future of Antrim football. Derry landed in their tracksuits, mangers with matching county gear, professional looking video camera and full Derry kit. Our lads wore what looked like a blue training top, all sorts of socks and shorts, no tracksuits and mentors wearing club and other assorted training gear. When one of the Antrim players had to go off injured it was a Derry physio who had to look at him as Antrim had none. The result does show that talent and hard work are the most important things but surely we owe it to all our teams especially those representing our future to provide the right level of funding and support. Local low level soccer teams seem to be better off.

Can you please answer my query regarding the u21 championship are you able to sanction to an u21 team.

Yes you are able to sanction 2 players in each code.

People have different views on amalgamations, sanctions and transfers. That these exist is for good reason. Sometimes it is portrayed as if the the problem is exclusively in the city with hurling clubs struggling to field meaningful teams at youth level. This situation is the same in North Antrim with hurling clubs ( outside the top Div1 clubs) there having such a small pool of potential youth in their catchment areas. Amalgamations, sanctions with their inherent challenges are the only short term option to provide some type of opportunity to keep hurling alive beyond the top clubs.

Any chance of the football league fixtures being released, I'm sure players all over the county are waiting to plan breaks with their family.

All the league fixtures will be issued to the clubs in advance of the next County Meeting on Monday 22nd February. #LetTheGamesBegin
