Con Magees win Junior Football title
Con Magees Glenravel 2-9 Glenravel 1-6
When they saw a five point half time lead wiped out within minutes of the restart of Saturday’s final against St Comgall’s Antrim, it appeared that Con Magees quest for the Junior Football Championship title was going to have wait for yet another year, but the introduction of substitute Declan Traynor added some impetus to the Glenravel men’s play and they regained control to seal a six point win in this their Centenary year.
With the strong wind at their backs Glenravel had the better of things in the first half and boosted by a David Higgins goal they went on to lead by 1-4 to 0-2 at the break.
The question on most fans lips during the break would five points be enough of a cushion considering the strength of the wind and when the Antrim men hit back with two pointed frees from Paddy Quinn and a brilliant struck goal by Caolan McKeown to square the game early in the second half they looked winners all the way.
However Traynor’s introduction had an immediate effect and his strong running from the half back line saw the Con Magees forwards gain some much needed possession.
Suddenly things began to change and with ex Antrim and Portglenone veteran Martin McCarry brilliant at midfield the scores began to come.
Joe Scullion (2) and Traynor picked off points to give them a three point cushion before corner forward Eamon Fyfe sealed the win with a well taken goal in a bad tempered game that saw a succession of black and red cards.
