Henry Shefflin Biography
Affectionately known as ‘The King’, Henry Shefflin made his debut in 1999 he played at the highest level for Kilkenny for over 15 years. He has won an incredible 13 Leinster titles and 10 All-Irelands, claiming a record-breaking 11 All-Star awards along the way.
In addition to this, he has won three Railways Cup medals and a further three All-Ireland titles with his club side Ballyhale Shamrocks GAA. Henry retired with 71 appearances in The Championship, good enough for third most in history, it was in these battles that he notched a career tally of 28 goals and 485 points ranking him as the top scorer in Championship history.
No stranger to adversity, Henry overcame a career threatening eye injury in 2004 and fought back to help Kilkenny embark on a record breaking ‘Four in a row’ run of All Ireland Championship victories from 2006 – 2009.
Testament to the impact he has had on the sport and the reputation he has forged for himself, he became the first GAA player to have his portrait hung in the National Gallery in its 133-year history.
One of the most iconic figures in the history of the GAA, the only thing more impressive than the statistics or his medal tally is the understated and model way he has carried himself on and off the pitch throughout his career.
