Mental Health Awareness Week Campaign
18th May 2020
Heads Up’ Mental Health Campaign
The devastating impact of mental ill-health in our Clubs and Communities cannot be understated and I trust that this resource, which has been developed to assist GAA clubs in Ulster to promote mental wellbeing among members, will assist in supporting those who need it.
Section 1: Mental Wellbeing
Mental Health and Wellbeing describes your mental state and effects every one of us. It effects how we think and feel about ourselves and our lives and how well you can cope with day-to-day life. Our mental wellbeing can change, from day to day, month to month or year to year.
Section 2: Mental Illness
What are the most common mental health disorders? Help for each of these mental health problems can be sought from the professionals listed in the ‘contacts’ section of this resource.
Section 3: GAA Clubs
Involvement in the GAA can have a hugely positive effect on a person’s mental wellbeing. Here’s just a few reasons why…
- Socialising and getting to know others
- Gaining a sense of identity and belonging
- Gaining a sense of purpose
- Gaining a sense of achievement
- Boosting confidence
- Enjoyment
- Improved physical health
Section 4: Help
It is important for individuals to recognize that mental illness are real, treatable illness from which people can and do recover. When having a conversation with someone whom you believe may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, it is important to approach the conversation with respect and dignity for that individual and to not blame the individual for his or her symptoms. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
