The Public Health Agency are currently running 'Take the Next Step' , a promotion to increase awareness of the health benefits of walking.
To that end The Northern Trust are running Walk Leader Training Days for anyone interested in setting up a walking group in their GAA Club
Roisin O'Hare , attended one of these training days on behalf of the Health &Well Being committee and her own club Naomh Éanna.
She has since set up a walking group at Hightown, starting off walking around the pitches and has high hopes of going further afield.
This is a really good initiative to role out to other clubs as it can appeal to everyone, parents, grandparents or anyone with an interest in walking with a group.
The PHA feel that it is a more sustainable activity than something like Couch to 5K or Biggest Loser (which are great activities) as it can appeal to almost everyone unless you have a serious disability.
It's low cost and all you really need is a good pair of shoes.
Following the training day Roisin has been in regular contact with the coordinator Nicola Arbuckle, and she is extremely keen to help us promote this activity within the GAA.
