Antrim Allianz Cumann na mBunscol:
In October 1921 thirteen teachers, among them four Christian Brothers, founded the Belfast Schools League with the expressed purpose of promoting hurling in a city where opposition to all things gaelic would have been intense. Football competition was introduced in the early 1930’s and, thereafter, the development of gaelic games extended to most Catholic schools in the City.
On New Year’s Day 1971 an embryonic Cumann na mBunscol was established in Limerick by teachers hitherto involved in the annual Corn na Casca match between Dublin and Limerick schools. In the ensuing years the organisation expanded nationwide, motivated by its principal objective to promote and develop all aspects of gaelic games for Primary School boys and girls in all 32 counties.
Today Cumann na mBunscol Aontroim is a cogent and highly respected part of that national organisation. Currently it has 80+ affiliated schools in its three sub-regions - Belfast, South-West Antrim and North Antrim. Its officers serve at local, county, provincial and national levels of the organisation. Nationally it is highly regarded for its professional approach and energetic commitment to furthering the development of gaelic games, as it has continued to do for ninety-five years.
