Strategic Review of Hurling in Antrim

There has been widespread disappointment within Antrim with regard to the performances and results of the Senior Hurling panel in recent years. These performances and results stand in contrast to the performances of Co. Antrim Club teams, both at a Regional and National level. For example, in the past decade teams from Antrim have won (Loughgiel Shamrocks), and competed in the final of (RuairÍ Óg) the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Club Championship. Additionally, Kickhams Creggan and O’Donovan Rossa have won All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club titles. Phrases such as “there are quality players in Antrim”, and “how does this not translate onto the County scene?” are often used in relation to Antrim Hurling.

In response, the Antrim County Board have decided to undertake a “root and branch” review of hurling in the County. This assessment will be carried out independently by someone widely experienced in research methods, data analysis and academic publishing. More importantly, the assessment will be independent, with limited involvement from County Officers. We believe that this independence is important from the point of view of participation of as many individuals as possible. It is also important that individuals participating in the process understand that their input will be treated confidentially, and at no point will the individual responses of any person be made public.

The assessment will deliberately seek out the involvement of key stakeholders within the County. However, aside from those deliberate discussions and meetings, the assessment is open to everyone involved in Hurling within the County. Please include your name, the name of your Club, and your current role (if any) within the Club. This information will be used to determine which of the many aspects under enquiry you will be specifically asked to advise on, and also how to cluster responses. Emails and responses not containing this information will not be considered.

The consultation will close on October 14th and will attempt to report by Christmas.
