McKernan is senior Poc Fada champion

Donal McKernan won today’s Antrim Poc Fada at Feystown Glenarm when he beat all comers to claim the senior title for the first time. The young Sarsfields player, who won the Under 16 competition just years ago, before going on to add the All Ireland title, completed the course the over Gowkstown Hill in twenty strokes, the same number as runner-up Conor McAlister of Ruairi Og Cushendall but McKernan’s final puck carried over the finish line well ahead of McAlister’s.

There was success for the Ruairi Og club however when Orla O’Hara won the ladies competition in 27 pucks, ahead of Maureen Creelman of Cargin and Mairead Doherty of Rasharkin.

The under 16 boys winner was Daire Stevenson of St Paul’s who beat the luckless John McAlister of Ruairi Og, Cushendall. McAlister equalled Stevenson in the number of pucks but he lost a ball on his way around the course and that one shot penalty was his undoing.

Roisin McCormick of Loughgiel Shamrocks retained her Under 16 Girls title when she went around in 26 pucks, ahead of her club colleague Shauna McKillop, Ellen Leech of Cushendall and Orla Donnelly of Bridini Oga.

Once again the Shane O’Neill’s club organised the event superbly and Terence Mulvenna and his organising team deserve the highest of praise. The winners of Saturday’s even now forward to represent the county in the Ulster finals in Cavan on June 14th.
